[about]

Yoko Haveman (1994, Brazilian/Japanese) is an independent interdisciplinary artist: director, maker, and performer working across both theater and film. Her work collides  performance, visual poetry, and experimentation with themes such as eroticism, ancestral trauma, and idealism. She is a graduate of the Academy of Modern Theatre and Dance in Amsterdam, and she has collaborated with renowned artists and companies, including Rauwkost Film, Dansateliers, Ann van den Broek and De Dansers.

Haveman’s work is characterized by exploration and questioning of human behavior, identity, and the ephemeral. Her creations fuse philosophy, cinematography, and physicality, revealing a deep fascination for human vices, vulnerability, and resilience. She is driven by a quest for connection and equilibrium, often crafting works that balance the raw and the ugly. Her artistic process thrives on researching norms and generational 'curses' through intimate, reflective, and often confronting experiences.

She creates sensorial experiences in which the body becomes an integral part of the narrative. Her previous works, such as Solastalgia (2023), Conundrum (2022), the upcoming dance film NOSEBLEED (2026), and the theater production a tribute to everything that breaks (2026), demonstrate her experimental language and her desire to confront, move, and invite audiences into deep vulnerability and reflection. In 2022, Yoko was nominated for the Young Swan Award in the category of Most Impressive Performance, presented by the Association of Theatre and Concert Hall Directors (VSCD, NL).

At the heart of Haveman’s creations lies a commitment to sensory and emotional depth. Her projects frequently explore the tension between reality and illusion, infusing absurdity and authenticity to enhance the audience’s experience. By integrating elements of physical theater, visuals, and martial arts, she creates evocative moments that invite the unknown.

Yoko Haveman showed us dance is an embodied form of expression, emotional openness, and resilience. Her way of expressing the movements helps us understand our identities, then sharp its vale and endure our pain and doubts.
